Do you keep old cassette tapes?

My old tapes...do you have yours?

My old tapes...do you have yours?

My parents dropped off a box of old crap that I'd left at their house when I moved out many, many years ago. My kids opened it and were awed by its contents of cassette tapes. Hundreds of them.

"What are these Mom? What's this funny string (as they proceeded to unroll an entire tape of Paisley Park by Prince)? What do you do with them? They have music on them?"

Talk about a stroll down memory lane. That box captured my entire youth through music. From Sheila E. and Wham! to Harry Connick, Stryper, The Beatles, Cinderella and Bon Jovi. Then there was Amy Grant, AC/DC, Guns n' Roses and, ahem, Color Me Badd (dude, don't forget the extra "d").

Here's the thing. I haven't owned a cassette deck in 10 years. I don't even own a stereo (the iPod changed my life). But I'll keep that box of tapes forever. I may even bust out and buy a small deck so my kids can listen to those tapes.

Do you have your old cassette tapes? Or did you toss 'em?

Not only do I have a box of cassette tapes, I'll even fess up to owning that Color Me Badd one too. I do still own a stereo with a cassette player but I haven't dug out one of those cassettes in ages. I used to play them in the car on trips, since my car is old enough to have a cassette player in it, but I don't even do that anymore. It is fun to dig out an old mix tape I made and pop it in just to remind myself of what I was listening to when I was 19 or 20 though. They're like mini time capsules.

I have tons of cassette tapes, I even have all my albums since I was 16 and that was a lonnnnng time ago. But I have an old enough car that still takes cassettes and actually have a stereo system that plays cassettes and CDs with a turntable on top. I couldn't part with any of them.

I have many old cassetts at home with many different singers and rock-pop groups. I listen to to them once in while and the still in good shape.Cassetts are less likely to get damage than CD's although is too hard to rewind them.
