You Can’t Have Alexander Wang’s $850 Bag, Even If You Can Afford It

Alexander Wang’s Rocco bag, a embossed-leather duffle with studs all over the bottom, just became "available" for purchase on his site...but it’s already sold out.

Barneys already has a waiting list of over 400 for the bag, and Wang says the company is going to have to produce extras just to make sure there’s stock in-store.

Now, I think this is a very pretty bag. And I suppose in some circles the fact that an "it" bag's price falls in the sub-$1,000 range makes it affordable, but this is still rather expensive, in my book. I'm not judging the 400+ people patiently waiting to get their hands on it - power to them if they can spend $850 on a bag - I'm more just surprised that there are that many, and wondering what makes this bag so special. The studs? The embossed lambskin? The simple versatility? Or the hype?

What do you think about the bag above?

If you want your embellished black leather duffel now, check out Juicy Couture’s Etiquette Tote ($223.50) or Tory Burch’s Military Satchel ($475) – they're about the same size as Wang’s Rocco, and will set you back less than $500.

Guess I'm cheap...I shop at Target or Kohl's. My last purse I spent more than I EVER have on a purse, $50 at JCPenneys, on sale, because I REALLY liked it and had a bit of extra money. Usually I try to spend no more than $25. I really don't understand this economy then because there are huge dept/chain stores closing, (my daughter was a manager at the now closed Circuit City), large stores in the mall here closing as well, and yet....the Coach store is open in the mall, and the purses there start at $350. Not to mention the shoes that have only one design on them in many colors and styles that start at $100. There's another store in the mall that sells purses only that start at the same %300 and up price, which I find incredible. That's almost a month's worth of groceries. Where do people get the money to spend on one purse that is $850 and yet see other people standing in unemployment lines and not help out someway? If it's to be 'seen', then by whom? When I visit my friends or go out for the evening, I don't sit around and talk about my purse. And as one who has had her purse stolen before....I think I'd rather NOT call attention to my purse thank you very much.....I'm envisioning the Michael Jordan shoes that years ago kids were being killed over wearing. But I guess my money means more to me than others in how I spend it. Who knows....

Look, if I had $850 to blow on a bag, the Alexander Wang one would be it. The first time I saw the bag (in a magazine spread months ago) I've dreamed of it. It's the perfect mix of edge and sophistication, and the studs at the bottom will only make it even more durable. I wish I could find a decent knockoff (studs on the bottom are a must!).

Someoneelse, really? You dreamed about this bag? Seriously? Wow. I see nothing exciting about this bag. Looks drab and boring to me. It looks like my husbands overnight shave bag. For real!! I'm with Sandy, I don't spend more than $50 on a purse. I'm drooling over the Lucky Brand purses, but even on clearance in VS mag, I won't spend the $200 price tag on it. I can't understand why people spend $300 on shades, $2000 on purses, etc. I'd rather spend that money on a vacation or something. Oh well, I'm not super rich so I guess that's why I don't spend that kind of money on accessories.

Kind of a boring style, I don't get the wow. Too many women are spending money they don't have for a brand name bag, then they can't afford to put anything in it. Do women do it for other women? Because men couldn't care less. Unless you're over 45 and they're way younger. Then they hope you have the cash to back your lifestyle, and them.

That bag is so hideous that the word hideous doesn't even begin to describe how ugly I think that bag is.

I love love purses! But I only shop at thrift stores, antique stores and the occasional department store for purses. I rarely ever spend more than 20 dollars for a purse. I do own Coach, Dooney and Bourke and Kathy Van Zeeland purses but those were gifts from my boyfriend and mother for graduation and Christmas. I can't imagine spending those prices for myself.

This bag is so ugly that it's gone past pretty and back to ugly again. Yeah even if someone has $850 to spend it on this bag, they could spend it on something better. This is like paying $1 to buy a piece of trash.
