Would you tattoo on your wedding ring?

Sometimes it's really funny how random stories about dudes inking on their wedding rings can suddenly be considered really "timely" from a journalistic perspective, but that's what happened to columnist Donald G. McNeil when he discovered that Levi Johnston, the reluctantly betrothed to a little lady named Bristol Palin, just got her name tattooed on his ring finger. Which is really crazy, because Donald has his wife's name inked there, too!!!

"Suddenly, I had a bit too much in common with a high school senior who a week before had declared himself a redneck on his MySpace page, threatened to pummel anyone who messed with him and said he was 'in a relationship but didn't want children.'

"Now, with the mother of his pregnant girlfriend running for vice president, he had cut his mullet, shaved his peach fuzz, swapped his hockey sweater for a rep tie and an American flag pin, and manifested his love with a ring tattoo." --NY Times

Donald does however, bring up a good question, perhaps the most important in the election (hahaha): In an era where divorce is practically a given, just how stupid is it to get a wedding band tattooed on your finger?

Unsightly tattoos you'd like to cover up? Check out this handy make up trick.

And of course, I'm not sure how this quantifies anything, but his research seems to rely heavily on celebrity examples, which proves his point in a kind of ridiculous--albeit entertaining--manner. And the company ring bearers keep is kinda scary. The list kicks off with Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee (sigh), and also includes Tea Leoni and David Duchovny (the guy in sex rehab right now), and other esteemed stars that have taken the plunge: Kathy Griffin, Ashlee Simpson, Jenna Jameson, and, wait for it...Howard Stern.

Okay, so I think we're back at square one for the most interesting and gosh darn relevant B-lister with a wedding tat as Levi Johnston. Wow. Still, there's something freakishly impressive about anyone who would go for it. I guess I'm just having trouble deciding if the move is all romantic and punk rock or just plain foolish and reckless. I mean, isn't everyone certain their marriage is going to work out when they first get hitched? (Or at least, one would hope.) The wedding band tattoo: Yay or nay? You tell me.

Real tattoos may be kinda crazy, but fake ones can definitely be lots of fun. Check out how you can make a temporary fashion statement as opposed to a permanent beauty blunder.

absolutly i would tatoo my wedding ring then it's always "on" you don't have to worry bout it ever getting dropped down the drain or loosing it or it getting in the way while trying to get into your pockets. I think it's the best way to show your together for life and it's serious, of course i'm only getting married ONCE and if it doesn't work out oh well never going thro another one.

That's about on the same par as tattooing your partners name on your body! Tacky, dumb, and a sign of insecurity!

Why not??? I have my husbands name tattoo'd on me. And trust me I'm far from insecure!!!! And after our 2nd child is born in Jan we plan on tattooing our wedding bands on. Neither one of us can wear or rings at work and figured this is a way to have them on all the time. Don't judge people because of the ink they have on them it all means something to them whether you get it or not!! ( and no I'm not covered in them ).

I wouldn't actually tattoo my wedding band on my finger, but I might as well have. When I don't wear my ring, I have a little white band on my finger. It's the one tan line I love. :)

i don't think i'd tatto my wedding ring on. just because i really want a ring and a tatto underneath it wouldn't look so good (seen it done). however, i would tattoo my husband's name on me especially if we have children because he will always have a place in my life.

I secretly love this idea. I would want it to be written small enough to be covered by a broader wedding band. That way it's always there, no matter what.

I love tatoos, but I don't think it's a good idea to get the tatoo wedding ring. What if you get a divorce? It would be a constant reminder, be realistic....

I've seen it done by a woman in the military. She didn't want to risk losing her wedding ring (she was being deployed to Iraq) but she wanted it to be a part of her. I think in situations like this it could be a great idea.

I am somewhat skeptical of marriage in general. Not commitment, just marriage. I have always said that if I did get married that I would get the ring tatooed, however. The way I look at it is if I am going to get married, I'm not banking on getting a divorce. And if I do get a divorce, it will be a permanent reminder that I shouldn't have gotten married in the first place, and not to make that mistake again!
