Wondering if You Should Get that Mole Checked Out?

You know how they say you should get any "suspicious" moles checked out by a doctor? Am I the only one who finds the term "suspicious" a little vague and, well, suspicious? How the heck am I supposed to know what moles are safe and which are just cancer waiting to happen?

Luckily, there's this quiz that helps explain the difference between a normal ol' mole and one that should send you running to the dermatologist. It's so easy -- and a lot quicker than a stint in a doctor's waiting room (there are only so many back issues of Self magazine a person can read, am I right?).

Just take a glance at your moles and answer a few questions. It'll put your mind at ease, or let you know if there's a derm visit in your near future. Here's a sample:

If you could fold your mole in half, would the two halves line up?
Yes
No

The boarders of your mole look:
Sharp
Blurred
Uneven

The color of your mole is:
Brown
Reddish
Dark brown
Black
Multi-colored (red, brown, black, tan)

Fill in your answers and see your results to the full quiz here.

Skin cancer is serious business. So when I developed a smallish bump on my arm, the dermatologist got me in immediately. Found out that it was squamous cell, and not malignant, but left alone could have developed. Take your skin seriously. OBTW, love your website, I am registered. thanks

I had a mole on the side of my neck,a white circle formed around it.I did research before having it removed. The white circle was our bodies way of stopping cancerous growth. The biopsy of the root was negative, look for any white that begins to show.

The criteria you listed are a good starting point. But one of the biggest signs is if a mole changes. I have moles that have always been irregularly shaped, variegated in color, etc. But they were given the OK by the dermatologist. It's the mole that started itching that ended up being pre-cancerous. The hardest part is recognizing changes in a mole. Itching or burning are pretty hard to miss, but a slight change in size or shape may not be noticed. A lot of dermatologists will photograph suspicious moles to allow them to better assess changes in the future.
