What’s The Longest Acceptable Amount Of Time You Can Go Without Washing A Bra?

Over on Slate, a male reader wrote to Dear Prudence, asking whether it was normal that his girlfriend of six months has been wearing the same bra every day for two weeks. Was she unhygienic, or simply a normal gal? Prudie responded, saying she polled some of the cleanest women she knows and they wash their bras at most once a week.

We did a little research on the topic, and while it’s pretty easy to find information about how you should be washing your bras (preferably by hand in cold water, air-dried), how often isn’t something that has been spelled out or set in stone.

According to a British survey, women wash their bras an average of six times a year. That’s not even once a month.

But a few experts say we should be cleaning them a lot more frequently than we are. Cindy Johnson, co-owner of Sol, a lingerie store in Denver, believes you should have seven bras and wash them all once a week. “If you have seven good bras that you are washing frequently, your bras will last about a year to a year and a half,” she writes. “You want to wash your bra EVERYTIME you wear it. Believe it or not, the more often you wash your bras the longer they will last and keep their shape. You also never want to wear the same bra two days in a row (unless you’ve washed it).”

The people at bra retailer Intimacy recommend you have between seven and 10 bras in your wardrobe, but believe it’s permissible to wear a bra two times between washings, as long as you don’t wear it for consecutive days, “to enable its elastic materials to rest and retain their stretch memory.”

Now that we feel completely inept at caring for our undergarments and should probably buy some new bras immediately so we don’t contaminate something with our grimy garments, we want to know how often you wear and wash your bras. Tell us in the comments! --Catherine Strawn for The Frisky

Well in the summer (hot) months I won't wear a bra more than twice without washing it, and if I'm exercising or out in the sun alot that day, I'll wash it that very same day. In the winter months, I'll might wear a bra 2-3 times, that's only if it's cold and I haven't perspired.

I agree with princess. In the Summer I'll wear it once or twice depending on how hot it is. In the winter I'll give it two or three times depending on persperation!!

I would love to have an entire wardrobe of bras in a rainbow of colors and styles but alas, I am a busty lady and a single bra for me cost around $80 from a specialty store that has about 3 different models of bra in my size, I own one of each and a discontinued model from a while back. I know some out there will think this is gross but I would be washing stuff all the time if I had to wash between each wear, I have better things to do with my time. I can go as long as week but most typically I avg. about three days. Most bras I own, no matter how I care for them and I put them through a ringer, last around a year.

I'd say probably about every 2 weeks. That's just when I wash all my other laundry.

Now, I don't own 7-10 like they recommend above (well I probably do, but not all of them are comfortable!) so I do wear them multiple times before washing.

I don't think it's that big a deal with bras. Now underwear - I never wear them more than 1 day and NEVER more than one time. I wash them between every wearing.

First of all, what kind of guy pays attention to that detail and how does he know she may not have more than one of the same color/style. I know that when I find a bra, or anything of that matter.. I buy a few because it's hard to find things that fit people perfeectly. I don't think it's gross if you wear your bra for a week and don't wash it. I don't sweat much, but I would say I wash my bra when I feel like it's becoming dirty... I can sometiems wear a bra for a month or 2 and have no problem. Some people only have a few bras and can't afford to wash them after 2 wears... That is ridiculous!

I wash my bras once a week. I own a lot of bras but only have a ew that are truely comfortable, like a previous poster I am big chested and comfortable bras in my size cost a lot. So I have 4 that I wear very often and then have a few others that I'll put on when the rest are dirty. I can't imagine washing a bra after every use, that would just be so much.

I'm with the other busty women that posted before me. Bras are VERY expensive for me and I own about 5 or 6. Thing is is that I rarely wear the same one two days in a row so I may use one bra about 2 or 3 times before it comes down to washing it. when I do my laundry every 2 weeks, I just wash all of them and air dry them (it helps your bra last longer!)

i agree with all of the other posts. finding a bra that fits perfectly is very hard to do. when i find one i buy at least one in every color they offer. i WISH that i had time to do my laundry every week! i average twice a month. in the summer i won't wear the same bra more than 2-3 days in a row. if i sweat, i throw it in the hamper that day. if not i let it air out. in the winter i don't sweat nearly as much so i can go a bit longer. i own 9 bras. 7 that fit great and 2 that will get the job done while i'm washing the others. it's so funny b/c in college i owned a GAZILLION bra and panty sets and would NEVER dream of wearing a bra more than once before washing it, lol. the good ol' days :)
