What Kind Of Shopper Are You?

This is a situation that happens often, especially around this time of year: I'm at, like, a wedding or something, meeting complete strangers. They find out I write for Lucky and say something lovely, complimentary and good natured such as, "You must be such a good shopper! I'd love to go shopping with you." And I immediately feel...terrible. Like I've been caught in some huge lie, like I'm the fraudiest fraudster in Fraudtown.

See, I am not what you'd call a "good" shopper. I have friends who glide through stores caressing fabrics, joking with the salesgirls, admiring and setting down accessories like they're Ming Dynasty antiques, just really enjoying themselves and then leaving with unexpected items they love and wear for years. And I know people who are eagle-eyed in any type of shop: They have a goal and a budget. They get in, get out. They declare victory. I admire both of these styles so much, but it is NOT what it's like for me. Instead, I'm never sure what I want, I get clammy and dizzy, I make awkward-dorky conversation, I've been known to cry in the dressing room over a mound of ill-fitting jeans, I consistently wear the wrong underwear to sample sales and I worry constantly and irrationally that I am going to get lipstick on a $400 blouse, or worse, B.O.

Check out our denim guide to help avoid hitting the dressing room and realizing that the jeans you're dying for are one foot too long and don't pull over your knees.

Part of the reason I love shopping on eBay, Etsy, and, heck, near any space online, is to compensate for this in-store shopping handicap. Risky or not, I'd so much rather deal with the awkwardness of something not being right (including my underwear) in the privacy of my own apartment. And lately, when those kind strangers ask me for tips on amazing, out-in-the world shopping, I lean in conspiratorially and whisper, "I don't know about that, but I can help you find some incredible deals on eBay." Like Dolce Vita sandals, which I am currently buying by the armful, at deeply discounted, non-bricks-and-mortar store prices.
I'm curious, readers: What's your shopping style?

I would like to be a good shopper. But I don't generally make conversation with people I didn't bring into the store with me and I inevitably ended up trying on a mound of clothes and finding few if any that work. So I guess I am a 'knows what she wants' kind of shopper. I am always in search of clothes with a fit that flatters me, to fill a certain clothing void I feel in my wardrobe. I have rare moments of success where the perfect piece comes along. But mostly I am just frustrated that things aren't in my size or fit oddly and I can't find what I want.

I am a store shopper not an online shopper. Buying anything I haven't tried on in person is asking for disaster.

I'm the exhausted frustrated kind! Trying on clothes, going in and out of dressing rooms, is really tiring and I get grumpier as the day progresses - whether it is because I haven't found anything that works, or I'm just as easily apt to be grumpy because I HAVE found things I love - too many and I can't afford it all!! Or I get nervous in fitting rooms without locks or securely-shutting doors (or worse - curtains!) because I'd hate some unruly kid to fling open the curtain with a whoosh and the whole store would see me in my horrible underwear! I also am terrible at small-talk so I always have awkward exchanges with the staff, or I talk too much, or not at all. Shopping online is so much easier, I agree, but I have a weird body to fit (not in ways that the clothes can be simply altered either - my problem is dresses and skirts are too short and they need to come to my knee but they never do and also the fitted waists are always in the wrong place for my natural waist) so I must try things on. If I didn't have to pay extra shipping charges to return items I would happily order online more! Actually I wish the stores would just bring the clothes to me! Come over with a huge van of clothes that I could try on in my own home and with my own other items and then just keep what I like!

I am a better shopper when I shop with friends... I never know what I want, I never know what looks good on me or what goes together... but when I have an honest friend with me it's so much better (even if it's just my husband who care not what I wear)...

i avoid stores at all cost and pray to whatever power that is out there that i never have to go into a clothing store and "try and buy cloths"... does not work when your body is 6diffrent types of weird sizing. but give me a book/craft store and an unlimited budget and i'm a happy camper.

I shop like a man. I have a purpose. I know exactly what I want or need. I take a pass through the store and if I don't see what I want, I'm out. If I need to try something on, I grab the ones I like, try each piece on once and if I love it, it goes in the maybes. If I don't love it, it's gone. By the time I get to the register, I know exactly what's in my budget and have chosen.

I love my friends who shop and lounge and try on things 12 times, but dude, I can't shop with them. It makes me insane.

I am in and out and done.

First of all, thanks for putting up such a wonderful discussion. There are definitely multitudes of shopping personalities. I've experienced first hand with a wide spectrum of my own friends. I've always enjoyed shopping "girly girl shopping" for clothing, makeup, perfume, underwear, etc. But I don't just walk into a store aiming to buy something and come right out with what I want. I think of shopping as an adventure, sometimes I can wander in and get out after about 2-3 hours of shopping without what I first went in for, but with some other wonderful item(s) I wasn't expecting to find. It feels like a scavenger hunt and I'm always on the hunt for good deals. Some people may think of this as a waste of time, but shopping this way just makes me happy. Call me a shopaholic but maybe it really is setting off the endorphins in my head. Shopping helps relieve my cravings, stress, and anger sometimes. Eventually, I found that I prefer shopping alone since I find most of my friends too impatient to stay behind with me. I like to take my time!

Lol I love this topic. I shop 2 different ways. If I'm by myself, like someone said above, I shop like a man. I have a purpose. I usually browse through the store websites before I actually go to see what I like and what I want. That could also be a major downfall. When it's not in store i get super frustrated and just want to go home in piece and curse the world lol. And then 10 minutes later I totally regret leaving and end up back at the mall again to do it all over again. I also HATE going in and out of dressing rooms a million times. I have a thing that when my hands get dry and I have to try on a million clothes it's the end of the world lol. But with my friends I don't mind browsing through the store and just not have a major purpose. It's more fun and relaxing. But either way I love shopping!!!

I am the disgustingly shy shopper. Sometimes if the sales person is fun enough I'll come out of my shell but usually they have to ask something again because they didn't hear my answer. It's odd because I usually a socially outgoing person, but when it comes to shopping, I'm like a little mouse.

I love to shop. But only at the resale shops where I can afford everything and it's like a treasure hunt. You spend $20 and leave with mint condition or even new fabulous designer duds and are happy. In a regular store I go in, get what I need , browse a bit out of curiosity (like who in their right mind would pay these prices!) and leave only with what I went in to buy. No regrets.

I am an eagle eye shopper. I actually pride myself on this b/c It gets me in and out and since I usually shop the day of an event when I need the clothes this is perfect. I know what I like. I know what my closet needs and I'm out....
