What 80s-inspired trend would you wear?
partner
This morning, I taped a segment for the Today Show on how trends
from the 80s are making a comeback. Neons and brights, shrunken leather
jackets, short full skirts, even shoulder pads! I remember wearing
shoulder pads in the late 80s - we all thought they made us look taller
and skinnier (by making the shoulders look wider, the waist looks
smaller). This weekend, I saw four different women in their twenties
wearing them and, to my surprise, two actually pulled them off! Will
you revisit the 80s trends? How would you make them look modern?

I'm a nineties baby. Let's just say I used to raid my mom's 80s clothes for Tacky Day.

Big jewelry is fun. Leggings are fun. Bright colors are fun. But I can forget the shoulder pads and awful hair.

Having been born in 1978, I thank my lucky stars that I didn't have to go through all that God-awful '80s fashion & qualify myself for a spot in the Fashion Hall of Shame. Where do I even BEGIN?? The big hair, the garish makeup, the tacky plastic jewelry, the oversized sweatshirt, the leggings, the shoulder pads... Ugh! Definitely NOTHING to get nostalgic about the decade of excess. Yet, it boggles my mind how some idiots in the fashion industry think these horrid trends are worth revisiting in the 21st century! Seriously, have they finally run out of creative ideas up there?? Unlike the timeless classic elegance of the '40s or the artsy bohemian look of the '70s, the gawdy '80s should just stay dead & buried like a bad memory.

Hmm...I have a vintage Guy Laroche skirt suit from the early 1980s that I've been considering having the shoulder pads removed from...maybe I'll wear it for the season before I commit to it!

There were shoulder pads of different sizes. The smaller ones were ok. The humongous ones that made you look like an NFL linebacker were ridiculous.
I'd rock peg-legged jeans/pants again. I would not rock stirrup pants. I didn't back then and won't now. I always called them "mime pants."
I have the same haircut I had in 1988-- a short layered haircut in a boyish style. Back then, I spiked it up and sculpted it with gel. These days, I just run some freeze spray through it while it's wet and go. I never had a big monstrous feathered or permed hairstyle and never will.
And if you want really remember crazy big 80s hair. . .tune into that old 80s shows Friday the 13th the Tv series on Chiller at 3 pm weekday afternoons. The character Mickey, her hair is beyond big. In fact, I think her hair is bigger than Texas and Alaska combined. It's teased and permed and poofs a good 8 to 10 inches above her forehead. In some scenes, her hair dwarfs everything and everybody else in it.

I ripped them out in the 80's! Not a good look for someone who's already square shaped!
