Being "of a certain
age", and from the South, I was taught early how a lady
attempts to retain grace and poise in the face of heat and
humidity. Its not always easy! And that was before climate change!
I well remember an aging southern belle confiding to me when I was
a young girl: "Honey, Ive spent all my life trying to avoid
sweating!" My favorite refuge from the relentless attack of
the stickies is very simple...a refreshing shower, tons of dusting
(bath) powder and a huge fluffy powder puff! In my direct
experience, I am a third generation southern girl to learn the
pleasures of the puff, and I'm sure it goes back several more
generations beyond my early teacher...my grandmother. I can still
see the huge plumes of dusting powder emanating from her boudoir
after we bathed and patted ourselves down liberally and sumptuously
with bath powder. In those days, for you younger girls--there was
something called a "slip"--a slinky and sensuous
undergarment--Oh, you knew that? So sorry. But anyway, what better
afternoon than a bath, a puffing, and lounging beneath the ceiling
fan in our slips, going through Grandma's jewelry box, talking
about which pieces she might bequeath me! My mother, quite a duster
herself, was fond of the fragrance line that was then popular
called "Chantilly". When ever I now catch a whiff of that
old scent, I am transported immediately to those delicious
afternoons. Its just hard for humidity to deal with the powder, the
puff, the slip and the ceiling fan! You might throw in some sweet
tea for good measure!

Report AbuseI love it! I'm a New York City native (now living in the South) and I powder puffed as well during the summer up there and as well as down here!
