Sloppy Dressers Drive Me Crazy

Ok, full disclosure: I am no stranger to psychics, and they usually surprise me with their spot-on readings. But yesterday I met New York-based psychic Mary T. Brown, and she gave me a reading that totally blew me away.

Unfortunately I can't tell you the specifics (it's like revealing your birthday wish--it doesn't come true if you say it aloud!) but I can let you in on one of the fascinating parts of our meeting: Somehow we got on the topic of fashion and she repeated back to me something that I have been saying to friends and colleagues over and over: Why do so many people dress so sloppily?

I just don't get it. I see people every day, wearing shorts and flip-flops to the theatre. Just yesterday I saw someone in huge, chunky sneakers and wrinkled, shin-grazing khakis. I mean, who wears ripped boyfriend jeans to a chic restaurant and t-shirts with curse words to work like "Bleep Happens"?!?

Great fashion has never been more affordable than it is now--thanks to Target, H&M, Top Shop, American Apparel--so money isn't as much of an issue as it once was, thankfully. But I just don't get it! It's one mystery that even a pro like Mary T. Brown can't divine.

What do you think? Do sloppy dressers drive you crazy too?

I see people dressed in what I wouldn't do yard work in. Really, lack of common sense , I suppose. I remember about 5 years ago, a young women's softball team was invited to the White House. They showed up in flip flops. Now, didn't these young women have mothers with a tad of fashion sense who could advise them?

More and more formal weddings are attended by people in jeans and athletic shoes.

Sign of the times maybe... but it's sad.

    YES! YES! YES!

Now, I will be the first to admit that when it comes to getting dressed, I am probably somewhat more formal than most.

I like wearing pantyhose when I go to work, particularly with my skirts and blazers, because I think it's just more polished & professional looking. I like the very sheer pantyhose from VS, and I just feel more complete when I wear hose to work.

I can't stand it when my children won't iron a T shirt on the weekends. And don't even get me started about those dang CROCS everyone wears. I agree with Nina Garcia, on Project Runway. After the age of 2, they just aren't that cute.

Being neat & well groomed is always in fashion, whether it's making a Starbucks run or going to work or going to the Mall. Like my grandmother would say, "Put on some lipstick, you never know who you might see when you're out."

Now, make-up is optional that is something that on most, the less is more rule should always be used as a guide, and I just wear lipgloss in a nice nude shade. Lipstick is more special occasion, but it's always nice to put your best foot forward, always. And that includes tying your laces on your shoes, hiding your thong underwear, combing your hair, etc.

Nice blog! I never realized I needed to vent about neatness. I enjoyed it. *SMILE*

kids today are not taught common sense.. they only go with the trend. Everyone just follow "fashion" blindly. Flip flops.. that's the ONLY shoes to wear nowadays, right? Even the women's sandals are just fancier flip flops... what about all those "baby doll" clothes that make any women size 6 and above look pregnant??? BLIND FASHION... that's today's society.

I agree ! My complaint lately has been seeing everyone in their pajamas.. what's the deal there? Is it really so draining to actually put real clothes on to leave your house. My next door neighbor goes to the grocery store in her pajamas, including bed and fuzzy slippers. It's not a pretty sight people, believe me. I don't think we have to go all out, with ties, high heels, etc.. but a little self respect would be nice. I have had enough with seeing girls in their sports bras and hoochie shorts (in the mall,no less.. not at a gym or sports event).. Sorry, but I don't need to see your booty or boobs, I don't even know you.

it takes as long to put on a nice outfit as it does to look like a slob! i love to people watch when i am out and about and it amazes me how little some people care about what they are wearing. i hate p.j. pants on people who are not actually going to BED! so ya got on these long dragging p.j.s on the streets and then you go home and get into your bed!!! UGHHHH! imagine all those germs on your sheets! c'mon, dress up!

Some years ago I had a co-worker who dressed like she was doing yard job. We worked at an office, so this was totally innapropiate. Turned out to be she was really angry at our boss, at the rest of the co-workers, and at her job in general. Dressing sloppy was her way of showing anger. Needless to say, she lasted just a few months there.

But that's a too complicated explanation. I guess some people just don't care how they look. Or they think they are too-cool-for-dress-pants-and-a-nice-shirt.

Too many people are just lazy.

What drives me nuts? If you aren't on an athletic playing field/ tennis court you shouldn't be wearing white tennis/ running shoes!

AND jogging suits on people that obviously don't jog.

    ugh...i cannot stand gross dressers!

like the article says, with so many affordable stores around, it really doesn't take that much effort to look decent!

i mean i know it's a look to look all disheveled or whatev for teens, but i'm a teenager and i don't look like a slob! i mean, i don't wear like anything fancy by any means, and i am comfiest in shorts and a t-shirt and flipflops, but i make sure my shorts fit, i make sure my t-shirt is a nice fitted one and not all sloppy and baggy, i make sure my flip flops match, and i add sophisticated touches like a summer scarf, cuteearrings, or a cute bag.

i call my look "dressing up the jeans and t-shirt.

    lol!

oh yeah alos, i CANNOT STAND all of the girls my age who run around in low cut jeans and like belly shirts with their thong straps hanging out!

ICK! it takes as musch time to make sure your thong is peeking out just so as it does to make sure your undies r in ur pants!

    lol!

i mean i wear low cut jeans too, but i make sure my shirt is normal length so i don't look gross

i mean, not only do i not WANT to look gross liek that, but my mom and dadw ould not in a MILLION YEARS let me out of th ehouse looking like that.

I agree that if you are going to a nice restaurant maybe you should dress up a bit. You mentioned though that it is easy and cheap to dress nicely these days. I don't know where you are getting your information but incase you haven't noticed our economy sucks. The middle class is slowly being weeded out. People can't afford to keep their houses much less put food on the table. Did you ever stop to think that when you see some one out and about who is dressed like they just got done mowing the lawn that maybe that is all they can afford to wear? How shallow of a person do you have to be to judge others solely on what they are wearing? Don't you think it is more important to spend money donating to the local food pantry than buying the newest and most fashionable shoes, pants, or shirts? You should quit worrying about how others dress and start worrying about the future of your country.
