Michelle Obama: Smart speech, sassy dress

When Michelle Obama appeared on stage last night at the Democratic National Convention, I felt nervous. Not only for what she would say, but also because I feared she had made a huge fashion mistake with that starburst brooch. However, quickly into her speech, all of my fears were laid to rest. Obama was smart, smooth, warm, accessible and powerful. I loved the message of her speech, the idealism, the American dreaminess of it. I know this is exactly how I was supposed to feel, that these particular words were put together so I would respond in this particular way. But it still got me (in fact, I'm embarrassed to say, there were points when I had chills--then again, I'm a sucker for love, moms, kids and bootstrap-success stories).
And as for the dress? I still think the front bling flower was a little odd, but the shape and color were both gorgeous. It looked good on her, it suited her frame and was far, far superior to some of the uptight, dowdy-horrible suits we've seen at these things. Part 2 of Michelle Obama's speech, after the jump.

There are probably many arguments to make against the Obamas, many that I'd disagree with, but many that would be intelligent just the same. But...the Obama's are a disgrace? I don't think so. And the reason the dress was mentioned is because you are reading a blog about fashion and beauty. So, yes, what this very prominent woman wore on a very important night matters here.

So krazytvettegirl can you give any valid reasons why you state the Obamas are a disgrace to America?

Why are you perpetuating the judgement of women based on their looks? The first thing you think of is her DRESS? Do you think of a man's suit as soon as he goes on tv? Okay, maybe you do, if fashion is all you think about. But please do yourself and other women a favor and let them feel confidant that they can do anything, without being judged based on their clothing.

Just goes to show....what a women wears is just as important as what she says.

Makes me wonder though would we have taken her just as seriously if she were sporting dreadlocks or had short curly hair or sporting a fro?

Seems she has just to right image to make the right impact.....

The first thing I thought about was what she would say. And...the second was her dress, it's true. Fashion is not all I think about (that would be really weird) but writing about fashion is what I do for a living so, as you can imagine, I think about it a lot.

I think she has left her true self behind and trying to look "white" for the votes. Look at her at the beginning of all this campaigning and you'll she that she's "transformed" her look...to conform to the "ideal".... Yeah... and now she loves America!!

In response to boat_r0hker who stated that Obama did not put his hand on his heart during the pledge and stated a bunch of other untrue facts....may I suggest before you shoot off your mouth you do a little research? Obama was not putting his hand on his heart during the National Anthem in that picture you referenced. Etiquette states that putting your hand on your heart during the anthem is not necessary. He does have experience in the Senate....3 years for Illinois and provided over 100 mill in tax cuts to families across the state. I would like to hear what you are referring to when you say he defaced the flag....I am not familiar with that, but of course you said he had no experience whatsoever and yet he does. Please do some intelligent research and comment on pertinent issues and not the ravings of radical conservatives, that is "pathetic and childish." Be smart...choose smart...don't read columns like this to get your political information. This is a fashion column!

Let people wear whatever they want to wear! If she likes it and it fits, the let it be! Would any of you like someone judging your attire every morning when you left the house?
