Homemade recipes for your skin

With the economy doing whatever it's doing, who couldn't use some thrifty skincare right about now? I loved the fun homemade recipes you posted in response to my recent blog on salmon-beautified skin. Since this is the season for fresh produce and farmer's markets, I'm very inspired to whip up concoctions that do your skin good. My fridge is loaded with blueberries, strawberries and peaches (oh, the vitamins! The anti-oxidants!). But I'm just as ready to wear the smoothie as drink it! So here's my favorite recipe.

Andrea's Super Simple Banana Mask:

This softens skin that's a little dry or sunburned. Mash up a banana and apply to your face; leave on for about 10 to 15 minutes. The fruit nourishes skin with moisture and nutrients (such as hydrating Omega 3s and 6s, plus vitamins C and B6 and potassium). Not to mention, it feels awesome!

I also love reader Sugr_Brez's Oatmeal/Avocado Mask, posted last week (she says it makes her glow for days!):

Mash together 2 T. oatmeal (dampened with a few drops of milk), 1/4 avocado, a few drops of honey and a few grains of sea salt. Rub it all over your face and neck. Rinse.

While we're talking skin, for an article I'm working on I'd love to hear any great tips you have for making fancy skincare serums and creams last. Thanks!

I find it helpful to dry with toilet paper instead of a towel. Towels sit there allday collecting dirt and what not. Toilet paper is always fresh. Ever since i've been drying my face with toilet paper i find my face more clearer and less irritated!!!

To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.

this works great for puffy eyes

just put a thin slice of a cool cucumber on both eyes, while they'e close, and pretty much relax for 15-20 minutes. You can repeat the application if needed.

Also, cool potato slices on the eyelids work good too.
