Tip No. 1:
When selecting at-home hair color, never go more than two shades lighter or darker than your current tone. Jason Backe, co-owner and head colorist at Ted Gibson Salon, warns that if you do break this rule it could lead to disappointing or disastrous results because unlike at the salon, the product is pre-mixed, so it's impossible to control the volume of peroxide.

Report AbuseThe problem is, is what these manufacturers don't tell you is that products like Feria are a metallic dye which facets to the hair shaft and if you try to use any other non-metallic color the result will and can be devastating (you can melt your hair). Also these at home hair colors are designed to work within a shade or two which means that if you are a natural brunette or darker and try to go more than 2 shades lighter you'll end up orange, plus if you are a blonde and try to go more than 2 shades darker you'll end up with mudd! Another thing they don't tell you is that if your hair is already colored and you want to go lighter it WILL NOT WORK! Because you CANNOT LIFT COLOR WITH MORE COLOR! You also never know what volume the developer(peroxide) is so it could be more damaging than you think. I have been a hair designer for 16 years trust me its worth paying the money for a salon to do it right the first time, or pay more than double to have them fix it from the box color you decided to try!
