As I was reading the
fabulous new Neiman Marcus catalog the other night, I was
stunned by all of the beautiful animal print dresses, coats and
accessories there are for Fall '09! Neiman Fashion
Director Mr. Ken Downing said in the foreword: "Leopard roared
onto the scene!" And I remembered that one of the
main fall trends identified by Bergdorfs is "Animal
Magnetism", featuring yet more offerings in leopard, zebra,
cheetah, snake and tiger print.
I was in the middle of remarking to myself how durable these animal
prints are in fashion---around year after year---when I suddenly
thought; "OMG! Could our fascination and love for these items
be a warp in the evolutionary process? Does our longing for a
leopard print bag touch a little droplet of our DNA that refuses to
let go of our former cave life when our hubby, Trog, brought such a
prize home from a hard day of hunter-gathering?"
Surely not....ya think? Surely some design expert will tell me that
the patterns and colors are so usable, that they go with so many
other patterns and colors, that they add an exotic touch to
brighten up any ensemble, that they just lend themselves to use in
so many fashion cycles.
Surely some evolution expert will tell me that it can't be,
after all of these millennia, some little irrepressible female
trait that we love to be swathed in the fruits of Trog's
victories!
Right? Right?
Now, mind you, I'm not talking about the real thing here---not
fur! I'm talking about prints on cotton and wool and silk and
velvet! All faux! So chill animal lovers, we're showing our
love by replicating the look!
Just look at the Juicy Couture legging in cheetah print cotton and
polyester and the Christian Laboutin Tall Zebra Boot shown above!
How gorgeous can you get? And how useful in coordinating a wardrobe
and making us feel just a little feline and sexy!
So c'mon cave girls! Next time you get a little flush when you
see an accessory in cheetah print or a little skip of the heart
when you see leopard print skirt don't be ashamed. Its not so
much your neanderthal past that's whispering to you. You like
this stuff because its just so darned FABULOUS lookin!
