Are flip-flops in the city a no-no?

I love flip-flops as much, if not more, than the average person (I have 18 pairs, at last count), but I still feel like a dirty person when I wear them around the city (unless I'm going to get a pedicure, for which they are definitely required). I mean, New York City streets are filthy, and there's nothing more unsavory than that line of dirty sweat that forms along the edge of the rubber. Even though I always, always wash my feet before bed every night (my one OCD habit) it's not enough to counter-act what I've just put my toes through.

Afraid to bust out your bare feet?  Treat yourself to a pedicure using our cross-country guide to our favorite pedicures.

But, I have my Working Girl tendencies, too, and nothing beats something that you can slip on and off as readily as Havianas. This is why I'm always on the hunt for simple, lightweight, easy-to-stow shoes that I can swap for heels when I get to work—and these espadrilles from Talbots, which just got reduced by 40%, definitely fit the bill (DISCLAIMER: these are a Lucky-wide obsession, as documented in this month's Style Spy). I think I might spring for them in Navy. Better for braving the subway than flip-flops, right?

Discover our favorite flip-flops of all time.

Bad Rap etal...living where I do we are expected to look spectacular every day whether for work or casual. I wear 4" heels almost on a daily basis. I agree when running around you need to be comfortable. With a good fashion sense it sounds like you always look in style. My fashion background is in my past but the fundamentals stay with you.

i love flip flops. wear them all the time for casual wear. your feet get hot & suffocate in flats so why not wear something that will prevent that. :)

If you were out in 110 degree weather then you wouldnt think twice on if you should wear flip flops or not. In Texas people wear them year round....yes even in the winter! So I guess wearing high heels are better for your feet then flip flops?!? Puhlease! No thanks....I'll continue wearing my comfortable slippers while youre looking like an idiot wearing heels grocery shopping and everywhere else!

I live in SoCal, and flip flops of all types and styles are worn every day by both men and women. There is nothing "Nasty" about it where I live.

What is the diff between a open toed "sandal" or "heel" being worn in the city? I dont get it? Dirt can still "get in". Anyway, cant you just take a shower at the end of the day and get over it?
