Are flip-flops in the city a no-no?

I love flip-flops as much, if not more, than the average person (I have 18 pairs, at last count), but I still feel like a dirty person when I wear them around the city (unless I'm going to get a pedicure, for which they are definitely required). I mean, New York City streets are filthy, and there's nothing more unsavory than that line of dirty sweat that forms along the edge of the rubber. Even though I always, always wash my feet before bed every night (my one OCD habit) it's not enough to counter-act what I've just put my toes through.

Afraid to bust out your bare feet?  Treat yourself to a pedicure using our cross-country guide to our favorite pedicures.

But, I have my Working Girl tendencies, too, and nothing beats something that you can slip on and off as readily as Havianas. This is why I'm always on the hunt for simple, lightweight, easy-to-stow shoes that I can swap for heels when I get to work—and these espadrilles from Talbots, which just got reduced by 40%, definitely fit the bill (DISCLAIMER: these are a Lucky-wide obsession, as documented in this month's Style Spy). I think I might spring for them in Navy. Better for braving the subway than flip-flops, right?

Discover our favorite flip-flops of all time.

I consider myself to be a fashion girl. I absolutely love heels. But not enough to be uncomfortable all day so I usually buy beautiful shoes but they are so uncomfy I never wear them. So I end up in flip flops 75% of the time! Ugh

I have flip flops with big flowers on them and rhinestone ones etc. etc. When I visit Florida I won't wear anything else. In Chicago I wear sandals in the summer. Please ladies give yourself a pedicure in the summer. It's a treat for you and everyone else.

Here in Cali, The flip flop thing is it for summer. They have a lot of cute ones you can wear. I probably wouldn't wear them to church, the job etc. But on my time yes. My toes are always ready to be seen.

Like clogs, flips are great for the yard, pool, walking the dog, etc. But no to going out. Time to "pretty up" those feet with some sassy polish and eye catching sandals.

There are a few places you can find pretty and cheap ballet flats that fold up and fit in a small purse for those out there who are walking to work and need comfort. I stopped wearing flip flops unless they have a leather sole and are nicely embellished. I detest the foamy flip flops that are ruined within a week of wearing here in NYC you can tell the tourists because they wear hideous sneakers and ragged flip flops, now not to be a total b---- I understand that after a while of other shoes you might have blisters and need a break from other shoes. But other than the beach and warm weather climates that are year round these do not belong on the streets of NYC, I have walked through enough broken glass on accident that I would not want to think about what would have happened if I was wearing ragged worn out foam flip flops.

I live in the suburbs, so people are always wearing flip flops. But when I venture down to Baltimore City, I ALWAYS wear a pair of flats or sneakers. I don't think having open toes in the city is safe or hygienic.

I have a flip flop addiction. I wear them as soon as the weather is warm enough until it's too cold for my feet. I don't live in a big city though so I don't have a problem with dirty feet. I would wear ballet slippers but I can't find any I really like.

I live in So Cal and loved my flip flops until I got stress fractures in my feet from the thong between my toes and lack of support. It was pretty painful. I now wear sandals when it's warm.
