Are flip-flops in the city a no-no?

I love flip-flops as much, if not more, than the average person (I have 18 pairs, at last count), but I still feel like a dirty person when I wear them around the city (unless I'm going to get a pedicure, for which they are definitely required). I mean, New York City streets are filthy, and there's nothing more unsavory than that line of dirty sweat that forms along the edge of the rubber. Even though I always, always wash my feet before bed every night (my one OCD habit) it's not enough to counter-act what I've just put my toes through.

Afraid to bust out your bare feet?  Treat yourself to a pedicure using our cross-country guide to our favorite pedicures.

But, I have my Working Girl tendencies, too, and nothing beats something that you can slip on and off as readily as Havianas. This is why I'm always on the hunt for simple, lightweight, easy-to-stow shoes that I can swap for heels when I get to work—and these espadrilles from Talbots, which just got reduced by 40%, definitely fit the bill (DISCLAIMER: these are a Lucky-wide obsession, as documented in this month's Style Spy). I think I might spring for them in Navy. Better for braving the subway than flip-flops, right?

Its funny because when I lived in New York I NEVER used flip flops! The thought of having something stuck between my toes was enough for me to stay away. Now that live in FL, I own several pairs because your feet needs to breath when its summer all year round. About a year ago me and my flip flops took a trip back to NY and I didn't realize how dirty the city was until I looked at the bottom of my feet at the end of the day! I think for a city like NYC, a pair of ballet slippers or the slip ins you picture above would work better and, if anything, keep your feet cleaner!

I agree, flip flops are a no-no in the city. Not just for hygenic reasons, but also for fashion reasons. Flip flops are for the beach, beach towns, Florida or southern California, the pool, or lounging at home. Or if you live in a small town or a suburb you'd probably fit in wearing them everywhere*, but not in a major city like NY! *But why wear flip flops to a barbecue when you can just as easily put on a pair of cute sandals instead and you will look better!

Although I wear flip flops around the city, I also love my ballet slippers, Croc ballet slippers and Sofft high heels. I recommend the Sofft high heels because they are ideal for walking around the city - sturdy heel and extra padding at the toe (for those times when you have to wear heels in the city). The Croc ballet slippers are great because I can wear them in the rain without slipping all over like I do in flip flops. Croc also makes super cute slip ons (like the Van slip ons) which are great with a pair of jeans when you want something a little cuter than sneakers, but still casual.

Eh, I don't think it's a problem..I've lived in Chicago most of my life, and I never even thought twice about wearing flip flops, and I've never heard anyone not wear flip flops because of sanitary reasons. It's not going to kill you. Plus they are really cheap if you don't have alot of money, it's great.

why do you guys think that people in Europe never really wear them? Out in the world its pretty nasty with everything that can pop up onto your feet. The bottom of your shoes have more germs than a toilet.

I rarely wear flip flops now that I'm out of college. Plus, it's very rainy where I live and summer is from late July to early September. I love my Old Navy flip flops and have them in several colors. Too bad I can only wear them a few weekends in the summer. During the work week I wear ballet flats or low heels.

Flip-flops outside of the beach, the pool, home or a run to the store are a no-no. They offer very little support or protection for feet. Also you have to keep your feet is good condition to look presentable (no bunions, fungus, chipped nails, etc). I don't understand the people who insist on wearing them as some badge of honor until the first day of snow. I ask someone once and she said its a shore thing. I guess I will never understand as I am not drawn to that garbage-heap known as The Jersey Shore. (seriously, if you think that place is gorgeous take a trip to a real beach in the Caribbean, you'll vomit when you think of "the shore" afterwards)

The flats pictured in this article are butt UGLY!They look like a ghetto espadrille..Much worse I think than wearing a thong slipper..at least those can be found with embellishments.
