"I learned a poem about Christopher Columbus in grammar school once upon a time that went something like: 'In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.' That's all I remember about this poem, but, c'mon, to remember something so abstract from the second grade, it goes to show the power of rhyme -- especially as I am learning how this power can help to manifest our intentions. Many traditions hold that when you pray or 'ask' for anything that will improve life (yours or someone else's), that those words should have both a cadence and some rhyme in order for them to be both effective and activate those intentions. Today, why not explore your own empowerment and intone an affirmative adaptation from F. S. Shinn and the School of New Thought: 'The tide of destiny has turned for me today. Everything now begins to go my way.' Say this silently and aloud for nine days straight and then flow, baby, flow!"

"This was quite a historical day for the state of Oklahoma, where in 1802 the first non-Indian settlement was established. It must have been interesting for the Native Americans to watch and see how their brother blessed and cleansed his new space as compared to the ancient ways of the indigenous. Information from Indian archives advises that to cleanse or clear any space we should use some dried sage leaves. Put a few leaves of dried sage into any non-flammable container and light with a match. Allow the sage to burn for a few seconds before blowing the fire out. Now, waft the smoke from the sage into all the corners of each room to be cleansed or just walk around the main floor of your space in a clockwise direction letting the smoke clear and cleanse the air as you walk a spiral to the center or the heart of the home. This ancient ritual not only sends negative energies packing but will allow them to be accompanied by any energies left over from people who lived on the land before you, called in Feng Shui 'predecessor' energy. Get a fresh start and bring balance and harmony to your home by clearing it first. A wonderful way to begin anew."

"Today marks the High Holy Day on the Jewish calendar known as Yom Kippur, which began last night at sundown and lasts until sundown tonight. This day is also called 'the day of atonement,' reminding us that we all have someone or something in our lives that needs to be forgiven -- including ourselves. Today, take a clean sheet of paper and a red pen and write down something you need to forgive in your life. Giving forgiveness is never easy, but we can hardly expect to be forgiven our own transgressions if we don't make room to do the same to or for everyone else. You have been given the strength, fortitude and compassion to rise above any hurts as you begin to recognize the blessing included in any wrong done. Ask yourself: 'Whom have I hurt and who has hurt me?' Now, make a list of three people you must forgive and three who you would like to receive forgiveness from. The entire time you are writing this list, tell each name you forgive them -- aloud. In three days, burn the paper anywhere outside -- allowing the smoke to clear the air. Then, trust that it has."

"Once upon a time in America there was a great fire in Chicago. And as much as we are supposed to use fire in Feng Shui to heat up our own recognition factors, I don't think Chi-town wanted to be forever known as this hot a spot. That said, during this week, 137 years ago, there was a blaze in that city that burned for more than 30 hours straight, taking the lives of over 300 people and decimating Sinatra's kind of town as they knew it. That singular and tragic fire birthed National Fire Prevention Week, an educational and instructional event that occurs around this time of year, annually. Burns are categorized in degrees as they progress in severity. First-degree burns damage the first layer of the skin. Second-degree damage both the first and second layers. These burns can blister and potentially cause dangerous infections. Third-degree burns are serious and mandate professional care. If you ever suffer from second or third degree burns, call for help immediately. For lesser burns you might want to try putting mushroom slices on the affected area as fungus can help heal a burn. And here's one of my personal favorites: For burned finger tips, simply hold your ear lobe by placing your thumb on the back side of the lobe and the burned tip (or tips) on the front. Keep them there for a full minute and, voila, no more burn! Now that's cool!"

"The beginning of October is associated with the energies of Libra according to the Western Zodiac. This sign is said to rule both the lower back and the kidneys. If you are suffering from any sort of kidney ailment (and only after consulting with a qualified physician), you should you consider using the energy around you to heal from the outside in. First, be sure that your home is not water deficient in any way, as that represents or translates to kidney deficiencies as well. Fix all leaky faucets and toilets in the home and workspace (this will save water as well!). Eat black beans, soy, kidney beans (duh!), blueberries and blackberries while avoiding excessively spicy foods. Finally, put a white vase filled with blue flowers directly inside the front door of your home to stimulate a healthy flow of energy and bringing balance to the body. All of these efforts can help flush any anxiety caused by kidney ailments away and restore vital Chi to those important organs."

"Today is my brother David's birthday. He lives a more than a few hundred miles away from me, so it's truly important to me to do something from my home base that will bring bright and happy energies to his. This year I am going to send some sweet wishes with some smoky signals. I will find a picture of David and I enjoying each other's company and put that in a wooden frame. Wood is the element that represents family in Feng Shui -- makes sense when you start to think about roots and branching out and growing from the same family tree! I will put the picture into the 'Family/Friends' area and light a green candle (green being the color associated with all of these sibling energies) in honor and celebration of our fabulous bond. As the candle burns down I will hope or pray that the coming year for my brother will be among the best that he has ever had.
