Yesterday I walked into my
favorite self-service beauty boutique and a salesperson asked if I
was looking for anything in particular. "Yes, dry
shampoo," I said, and she pointed me toward the back of
the store. Perfectly helpful. But as I reached the correct aisle,
another… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (31) | Blog

What causes
so-called "white heads," or milia, and how do I prevent
them and avoid them? Milia are tiny cysts under the skin.
They're often caused by over-moisturization and the use of
occlusive moisturizers that contain mineral oil or petrolatum. The
condition can be… Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (1) | Blog

Makeup artist Mally Roncal sort of pioneered the bronzy glow made so popular by Beyonce/Jennifer Lopez/Britney types a few years back; she also does a killer smoky eye faster than most of us can slice a cucumber. We asked her to tell us about must-have, non-Mally Beauty product she's loving right now: Read More »

The two adjectives that best describe my hair are "lank" and "spiritless;" thus, I've never had occasion to truly test-run a flatiron. But I now have new information from not one, but TWO reliable, independent sources, both lifelong flatironers: Of all the irons in the land, the GHD iron is the very, very best. It works better than anything else for both straightening and curling, they say, and it heats up in, like, 2 seconds; that said, it is not cheap ($225)—but neither person regrets the investment. So: Are my sources correct? Are they spending foolishly or styling wisely? WHAT IS THE BEST FLATIRON EVER? Read More »

The brilliant Sonia Kashuk, Cindy Crawford's longtime makeup artist, devised the idea of planning a week's worth of makeup looks in advance when she was on a trip with Crawford long ago. For every new outfit Cindy changed into during the week, they mapped out a different effect: Friday night: smoky eye + nude lip. Saturday night: black liner just along the inside of the lower lid + pink lipgloss; Sunday: a pale, shimmery eye + matte red lips, etc. Like Lucky's "A Month of Outfits": a nice, smart way to get the most mileage from your cosmetics bag and to stay out of a rut.

There’s a book about a glamorous British duchess who insisted on having her living room painted to match her face powder. I love that she thought of this--it's very Blanche-DuBois-tutorial--in how to establish a flattering backdrop for yourself. Then, surfing the Apple site, I found is free Benjamin Moore iPhone app that lets you take a picture of anything and promptly get an exact match from their over 3,500 paint colors.
If you find a beautiful shade in your makeup bag, you can now live in it--a cheap, glamorous, and totally personal touch. Read More »- Let’s talk: Comment (0) | Blog

I ran into fellow Lucky gal Kelly Gallozzi in the lobby today and was immediately struck by her super cool, a-little-bit-ethnic, a-little-bit-beachy necklace. In true fashion genius style, Kelly took it off an old Adam dress (which probably needed updating anyway) and now wears it on its own. How smart is that? Read More »

They're two very different things, right? For me, it's Petite Cherie, which was made by perfumer Annick Goutal for her daughter Camille. It landed on my desk a year ago when we were researching amazing products with pear as an ingredient, and since then, I've sprayed it pretty much every day to get through the bleak 3-4 PM time block. Like I say, not sexy, per se, but sweet and bright and sort of nostalgic, if that makes any sense—like the best, ripest pear you ate as a kid. Bottom line: it makes me happy.

I was going to do the mature thing and blog only about the very cute Avon hand creams on the left ($.99 each!), but THEN I noticed that avon.com has an AMAZING selection of OMG-worthy teenybopper (in the best possible way!) beauty alternatives! How amazing are these High School Musical hand creams?! Given that I'm a grown person who occasionally buys BOP magazine from the newsstand in her office building lobby newsstand (DOES Zac eat bugs? I needed to know!) and has visited the personal weblog of Frankie Jonas (a.k.a the "Bonus Jonas", age 8), Disney-infused bath and body products speak to me. Am I alone? Read More »

Turns out, Anne Hathaway is a great do-it-herself makeup artist. When you do Shakespeare in the Park, you have to do your makeup yourself. So with a big bag of Lancome, AH has been making it all happen--and she looks fantastic, especially her skin. Which is most likely a combination of Secret de Vie Eye Ultimate Cellular Reviving Eye Creme, Nutrix Royal Body Intense Restoring Lipid-Enriched Body Lotion and Soleil Ultra Expert Sun Care SPF 50 Sunscreen.
